Plakias beach

Plakias Beach on Crete’s south coast combines a long sandy bay, clear water and rocky coves, with taverns near the village and quieter stretches east.

Plakias Beach is a long, crescent-shaped stretch on Crete’s south coast, beside the village of Plakias and the Libyan Sea. Its shoreline mixes sand with fine pebbles, and rocky outcrops divide the bay into different sections. Swim or snorkel in the clear water, settle under a tamarisk tree, or use the sunbeds and umbrellas near the village. Taverns and cafés line the shore, while the eastern end is quieter and popular with naturists. Mountain and cliff views frame the bay.

A long bay with different sections

Plakias Beach, also known as Gialia, stretches along the village on Crete’s southern coast. The shoreline extends east towards Cape Mouri and is about 1.3 kilometres long. Sand and fine pebbles alternate along the bay, with rocky promontories creating smaller sections and sheltered coves.

The central area by the village is the most organized, with sunbeds, umbrellas and places to eat and drink. Farther along, the beach becomes quieter. The eastern end is popular with naturists, while nearby Ammoudi and Ammoudaki are also known for naturist-friendly swimming.

Swimming and exploring the coast

The clear, blue-green water is suited to swimming and snorkelling, and rocky areas offer more to explore beneath the surface. The beach is also associated with diving and other water sports. Water depth changes quickly in places, so take care when swimming with children.

Plakias sits in a bay backed by mountains, cliffs and olive groves. The south-facing coast gets long periods of sunshine, and the bay’s different sections let you choose between facilities close to the village and a quieter spot farther away. Wind can affect conditions on some days.
