Agios Pavlos
Beach

Agios Pavlos Beach

Visit Agios Pavlos Beach on Crete’s south coast for clear swimming water, snorkeling among fish and cliff paths leading to a natural cave.

Agios Pavlos Beach is on Crete’s south coast, about 58 km south of Rethymno. A sandy cove framed by rocky cliffs, it draws swimmers for its clear water and fish-filled seabed. Bring water shoes for the slippery rocks at the water’s edge, and snorkeling gear to explore the underwater life. Paths and steps climb the cliffs, with a route to a natural cave and a steep descent to a rocky, more secluded shore. Arrive early for a quieter swim and pack food and water, as facilities may not be available.

Agios Pavlos Beach

This Agios Pavlos Beach lies on the south coast of Rethymno, about 58 km from Rethymno town and 50 km from Agia Galini. It is one of several places in southern Crete called Agios Pavlos, so check that your route leads to the beach on the Rethymno coast.

The sandy cove sits between rocky cliffs. The seabed is rocky, and the water deepens gradually. The clear water and fish beneath the surface make snorkeling a reason to bring your own gear.

Steps on the right side of the beach lead up a cliff, where a stone path runs towards a natural cave. From the top, a steep descent reaches a more secluded shore with rocks instead of sand. Take care on the way down, and only swim there if you are comfortable in the water. The cove is also exposed to waves, so conditions matter when approaching the caves.

Planning a beach stop

A winding road leads to the beach, and parking is close by. The beach has been described as having sunbeds and umbrellas, but facilities and nearby businesses may not be available. Pack food and water in case there is nowhere open to buy them.

There is little shade on the beach. An early visit, around 7 to 11, can mean fewer people and a cooler stretch of the day. Water shoes help on the slippery rocks at the shoreline.
