Tampere is a city in southern Finland, set between the lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. The Tammerkoski rapids run between them and through the city center. The city's textile past is visible in the red-brick mills of the Finlayson district, where shops and restaurants now operate in former factory buildings. Tampere is also a university city with a large student population. Public saunas are a regular part of a visit, and the Moomin Museum is devoted to Tove Jansson's Moomin books.
Plan two or three days. Summer brings long daylight and lake swims, and winter suits sauna visits and snow. Use one day for the lakes and the forest paths of the Pyynikki ridge, where an observation tower gives views over the city, and one day for the mills and museums, including Vapriikki. The center is small enough to walk, and a sauna session fits into an evening.

Tampere FAQ
Why is Tampere called the Sauna Capital of the World?
The International Sauna Association and the Finnish Sauna Society awarded the title in 2018, citing the quality of its saunas and the highest number of public saunas in Finland. See public saunas in Tampere for etiquette and picks.
How many days do you need in Tampere?
Two days cover the rapids, Finlayson, Pyynikki, the Moomin Museum and a public sauna. Add a third for a lake day, Viikinsaari in summer or a national park. See Tampere in 2 days for the route.
Is the Moomin Museum open on Mondays?
No. It is closed Mondays and on 1 January, 3 April, 1 May, 19 to 21 June, 6 December and 23 to 26 December in 2026. Check the museum's page for current hours before you plan the day.
Is Tampere or Turku better for a short Finland trip?
Tampere suits saunas, lakes and museums; Turku suits a medieval castle and the archipelago. Trains link them in under two hours, so a combined trip is easy. See Tampere or Turku for the comparison.
How do you get from Tampere-Pirkkala Airport to the city?
The airport is 17 km from the center. Visit Tampere notes the direct airport bus ends from August 2026, so check Nysse's route guide for current public transport or book a taxi.
