Rovaniemi is the regional capital of Lapland in northern Finland and the main gateway to the region. The Arktikum museum, which covers Arctic nature and northern cultures, sits in town. Santa Claus Village lies on the Arctic Circle about 8 km north of the center. Most visitors arrive by flight or by the overnight train from Helsinki.

The season decides the shape of the trip. Aurora skies run from late August to early April, so winter suits visitors who want snow and northern lights. Summer brings the midnight sun, when the sun stays above the horizon at night. Autumn brings ruska, the Finnish word for the colored foliage, in a quieter window. Plan two or three nights to see the town and Santa Claus Village, and add one night outside the city if your schedule allows.
