Fiji is an archipelagic country in Melanesia, in the South Pacific, about 2,000 km north-northeast of New Zealand. The Republic of Fiji has about 322 islands, and 106 of them are inhabited. Viti Levu, the largest island, holds Suva, the capital and largest city, and Nadi, the main tourism hub with the international airport. Vanua Levu is the second largest island.
Most trips focus on white sand beaches, scenic islands and warm weather. The Mamanuca Group sits just off Nadi, and the Yasawa Group is another popular island destination. Soft coral reefs make scuba diving a common activity. Kava, known in Fiji as yaqona, is central to ceremonies and community life, and Indo-Fijian heritage is a major part of the culture. The warm season runs from November to April and brings heavier rain. The cooler season, May to October, averages about 22 °C (72 °F).
Five things to know before Fiji
- Carry an onward ticket and six months on your passport
UK and Canadian passports can visit visa-free for up to 4 months. Officers ask to see a return or onward ticket, and your passport should be valid for 6 months beyond your departure. Check other passports first. Visas and entry
- Book island transfers with your room
Most outer islands have no airstrip, so you reach them by the daily catamaran from Denarau or by seaplane. Transfers fill in peak weeks, so book them when you book the island stay. Mamanuca Islands
- Plan the Yasawas around the boat timetable
The Yasawa chain is served by one main catamaran route that runs up and back once a day. Missing it usually means an extra night, so leave a buffer before your flight home. Yasawa Islands
- Bring a sulu and cover up in villages
On a village visit, cover shoulders and knees, take off hats and sunglasses, and bring kava root as a gift for the sevusevu welcome. Ask before taking photos of people.
- Check the forecast in cyclone season
Tropical cyclones can hit from November to April. Pick flexible bookings for those months and follow the Fiji Meteorological Service if a storm is forecast.

Fiji FAQ
Do I need a visa for Fiji?
Not for UK or Canadian passports, which can stay up to 4 months visa-free with an onward ticket and a passport valid for 6 months beyond departure. Check other passports with Fiji immigration.
Mamanuca or Yasawa Islands?
The Mamanucas are closer to Nadi, often under an hour by boat, and suit a short trip. The Yasawas take longer to reach and feel quieter, so they suit a week or more.
When is cyclone season in Fiji?
November to April. Many trips in those months go ahead without trouble, but storms can close boat transfers and flights for a few days, so book flexible rates.
Should I stay in Nadi or go straight to an island?
Many international flights land late or leave early, so one night near Nadi or Denarau on either end makes the boat connection easier.
Is the water in Fiji safe to drink?
Resorts usually treat their water or supply bottled water. On outer islands and in villages, ask first or drink bottled or boiled water.
