Alnwick Castle

Plan a visit to Alnwick Castle in Northumberland for ornate State Rooms, a notable art collection, battlement walks and Harry Potter filming sites.

Alnwick Castle, in the town of Alnwick in Northumberland, is a medieval fortress and the Percy family’s home for more than 700 years. Inside, the State Rooms display richly decorated ceilings, paintings by artists including Titian and Canaletto, porcelain and Baroque furniture. Outside, you can walk the battlements, explore the grounds and join activities such as broomstick training or medieval workshops. The castle appeared as Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films, but its historic rooms and art collection give you plenty to see beyond the screen locations.

A castle and a family home

Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle dates to the Norman period, and its history is closely connected with the Percy family. Henry Percy bought the castle and its lands in 1309. The family has lived here for more than 700 years, and the castle remains a family home today.

Its role has changed over the centuries. The castle has served as a military stronghold, a teaching college and a refuge for evacuees, as well as a film location and residence. Its defensive character is still apparent in the towers, walls and battlements, while later alterations gave parts of the interior a more palatial style.

The State Rooms and collections

The State Rooms bring together elaborate interiors and collections of fine and decorative art. Look for detailed ceilings, carved furnishings, silk wall coverings and gold and silver decoration. The collection includes paintings by Titian and Canaletto, along with Meissen porcelain and Baroque furniture.

Some rooms are presented with information boards, and guides are available in the principal rooms to answer questions. The castle is still inhabited, so photography is not permitted in the State Rooms. If you want to take your time with the displays, leave space in your visit for the rooms as well as the outdoor areas.

Filming locations and activities

The castle stood in for Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films. The Outer Bailey is associated with the broomstick-flying scenes, and film tours explain locations used in the productions. The castle has also appeared in Downton Abbey and other screen productions.

There is more to do than trace filming spots. Depending on the activities running during your visit, you can take part in broomstick training, medieval workshops or children’s games. The grounds also have battlement walks and exhibitions, including displays connected with weapons and armour. These activities can add time to a visit focused mainly on the State Rooms, so check what is available when planning your day.
