St John's Gate

Visit St John’s Gate in Clerkenwell to explore the Order of St John museum, see the medicinal-herb garden and find out what guided tours include.

St John’s Gate is a 16th-century gatehouse at 26 St John’s Lane in Clerkenwell, housing the Museum of the Order of St John. Explore the Order’s history, from its origins as the Knights Hospitaller to the present-day St John Ambulance, then step into the Cloister Garden, where medicinal herbs recall the site’s healing tradition. The museum is compact, with hands-on activities such as marble paper making. Guided tours can include the church, crypt and rooms above the gate.

The gatehouse and the priory

St John’s Gate was built in 1504 as the entrance to the priory of St John, the headquarters of the Order of St John in Clerkenwell. The Order continues today through St John Ambulance. The gatehouse is a surviving part of the priory site, where the Order’s history meets the story of a London charity still in operation.

From the gatehouse to Hogarth’s coffeehouse

After the monastery was dissolved, the east tower took on a different role. Richard Hogarth, father of the artist William Hogarth, opened a coffeehouse there in 1703, and the Hogarth family lived in the gate tower. The building’s history therefore extends beyond its connection to the Order, into the changing life of Clerkenwell as London grew around it.

Inside the museum

The museum follows the Order of St John from its history as the Knights Hospitaller to its modern work through St John Ambulance. Its collection is small enough to explore without needing a long visit, with displays about both the Order and the ambulance service. Marble paper making is among the activities available, and guided tours can take visitors into the church, crypt and historic rooms within the gate.
