Leeds is a city in West Yorkshire, England, and the largest settlement in Yorkshire. It sits on the River Aire in the eastern foothills of the Pennines. It grew from a medieval market town and wool trading centre into a Victorian mill and engineering city, and today it is known for finance, law, retail, universities and culture. Visitors come for the ironwork Victorian arcades of Victoria Quarter, Leeds Kirkgate Market, one of the largest indoor markets in Europe, and the Royal Armouries Museum at Leeds Dock.

Plan two or three days for the city centre, one or two museums and a day trip. Leeds Bradford Airport is in Yeadon, about 8 miles north-west of the centre, and Leeds station has 18 platforms and direct trains to Manchester Airport. The Yorkshire Dales National Park is under 20 miles from the centre. Roundhay Park, one of the largest city parks in Europe, covers more than 700 acres. July and August are the warmest months, while winters are chilly and sometimes bring snow.

Leeds FAQ

How many days do you need in Leeds?

One day covers the arcades, market and a museum. Two days let you add an evening out and a half-day trip, and three suit a base for York, Saltaire and the Dales.

Is Leeds worth visiting?

Yes, if you like markets, Victorian architecture and city nightlife. It does not have a single iconic landmark, so it suits short breaks and combining with York.

Is Leeds better than York for a city break?

York is smaller and more historic, with walls, the Minster and medieval lanes. Leeds is larger, with more shopping, food and nightlife. Many travelers stay in Leeds and take a day trip to York.

Where should I stay in Leeds?

City Centre for shops, Granary Wharf for the station and canal, and The Calls for river views. Prices rise on match and concert days, so compare areas.

What is the best time to visit Leeds?

May to September for parks and open-air events, with June and September less crowded. December has a Christmas market, and winter is cold and wet but cheaper.
