Ambleside Roman Fort

Explore the remains of Galava, a Roman fort near Borrans Park on Windermere. Information boards explain the site, and entry is free.

Ambleside Roman Fort, also called Galava, is an archaeological site in a field near Borrans Park on Windermere’s northern shore. Built during the Roman period, it is thought to have guarded a route between Ravenglass and Brougham and served as a supply base. The low stone remains mark parts of the fort’s interior, including the granaries, headquarters and commandant’s house. Information boards help you picture the original layout. The site is free to visit, with open views towards the lake.

Known by its Roman name, Galava, the fort stands near the northern end of Windermere, in the Waterhead area of Ambleside. Its position was linked to a Roman road running between Ravenglass and Brougham. The site is thought to have served both a defensive role and as a supply base.

The fort was built during the Roman expansion into northern Britain. The remains visible today date mainly from the second century, though accounts of its construction place its origins in the late first century. It appears to have been demolished and rebuilt at a later stage.

The stonework sits low in the field, so the plan becomes clearer as you walk around it. Foundations mark parts of the fort’s interior, including the granaries, headquarters and the commanding officer’s house. Remains of the gates are also identified at the site.

The information boards explain how the buildings fitted together and help bring the outlines into focus. They also set the fort in the context of Roman activity in the north of Britain. The site is not a place of tall walls; its interest lies in tracing the layout and considering how the settlement worked.

Planning a visit

The fort is close to Borrans Park and the lakeshore, making it easy to include on a walk from Ambleside or Waterhead. It sits in a field, and the ground among the foundations can be rough or muddy after rain. The site is free to explore, and you can walk around at your own pace.

For more background, download the National Trust’s PDF guide before you arrive. If you are following a nearby walking route, check that it passes the fort rather than assuming you will see it from the path. There is also a library of books about the Lake District and objects recovered during excavations at Galava.
