The Isle of Wight lies 2 to 5 miles (3 to 8 km) off England's south coast, across the Solent. At about 380 square kilometers (150 square miles), it is the largest island in England. Newport is the county town, and Ryde, in the north-east, is the largest town. The interior is mostly rural, so most towns sit on the coast. The island is often called England in miniature because its scenery varies so much over a small area.
The draws are the coast, Victorian history and sunshine. The island gets about 1,800 to 2,100 hours of sunshine a year. The Needles, chalk stacks at the western tip, are a coastal sight. Osborne House at East Cowes was Queen Victoria's home. Carisbrooke Castle near Newport is where King Charles I was imprisoned during the English Civil War. Dinosaur bones and footprints can be seen on the beaches at Yaverland and Compton Bay, especially where cliffs erode. Allow a few days for the 70-mile coastal path.

Is the Isle of Wight worth visiting?
Yes, if you want coast walks, beaches and a slower pace. It is England's largest island at about 380 square kilometers and is often called England in miniature, so one trip covers cliffs, chalk downland and small harbors.
How do you get to the Isle of Wight?
By car ferry or catamaran from Wightlink or Red Funnel, or by Hovertravel's passenger hovercraft. The island is 2 to 5 miles off the mainland across the Solent.
Do you need a car on the Isle of Wight?
Not necessarily. Southern Vectis buses link most settlements with Newport as the hub. A car gives more freedom for the west and the Needles, and the island has no motorway.
How many days do you need on the Isle of Wight?
A day trip can cover one town and one sight, such as Osborne House or Carisbrooke Castle. For the 70-mile coastal path, plan several days.
Where are the dinosaur fossils on the Isle of Wight?
Bones and footprints show on the beaches at Yaverland and Compton Bay, mostly where the cliffs erode. Dinosaur Isle, a geological museum in Sandown, was established in 2001.
Is the Isle of Wight sunny?
Yes. It gets about 1,800 to 2,100 hours of sunshine a year and is said to be the sunniest place in Great Britain. Some winters have almost no snow and only a few days of hard frost.
