Mosque of Sultan al-Muayyad Shaykh

Visit Cairo’s Mosque of Sultan al-Muayyad Shaykh for Mamluk carvings, marble details and twin minarets above Bab Zuweila.

Near Bab Zuweila in Cairo’s El-Darb El-Ahmar district, the Mosque of Sultan al-Muayyad Shaykh is a major Mamluk complex completed in 1421. Its twin minarets rise above the historic gate, while the entrance portal, carved stonework and marble details reward a closer look. Inside, a courtyard leads to richly decorated prayer spaces, including a carved wooden ceiling above the men’s prayer area. The mosque replaced a prison where the sultan had once been held. If access to the minaret is available, the view takes in Cairo’s cityscape.

Construction began in 1415 under Sultan al-Muayyad Shaykh, and the mosque was completed in 1421. The site beside Bab Zuweila had previously held a prison where the sultan himself was confined. He vowed to replace it with a place for worship and learning once he came to power.

The complex included a congregational mosque and a madrasa, or school. Its endowments helped the madrasa become a prominent centre of study in the 15th century, with a library and teaching by leading scholars. Two mausoleums beneath the dome hold the sultan and members of his family.

The mosque stands beside Bab Zuweila, and its northern façade and minarets create a striking view from the gate. At the entrance, look for the red and turquoise framing, carved arabesque patterns and Kufic script. The large bronze door is said to have come from the Sultan Hassan Mosque.

Beyond the entrance, the complex has a spacious courtyard surrounded by arcades and prayer spaces. Inside, carved wooden ceilings, stucco decoration and marble inlay add detail to the architecture. The ceiling above the men’s prayer area has a dense pattern likened to a suspended carpet; the ceiling over the women’s prayer area is undecorated.

The minarets above Bab Zuweila

The mosque’s twin minarets rise directly above the medieval gate, bringing together Mamluk architecture and an older layer of Cairo’s built history. Their position makes the mosque easy to recognise from the surrounding streets. The minarets can be climbed when access is permitted, with views across Cairo and towards the Citadel. Check on arrival whether the climb is open, as parts of the mosque may be undergoing repair.
