The Mosque of Muhammad Ali stands within the Citadel of Saladin, the hilltop fortress above Cairo. Muhammad Ali Pasha commissioned the mosque in the 19th century, and construction began in 1830. Its Ottoman-style design was created by an architect from Istanbul. The mosque became one of the Citadel’s most recognizable buildings, with twin minarets and a broad central dome visible across the city.

The name Alabaster Mosque comes from the alabaster used on its walls. Limestone is also part of the building’s construction. Its elevated setting makes the mosque a natural stop for views across Cairo as well as for its architecture.

The interior opens beneath a large dome, with smaller domes around it. Suspended chandeliers and lamps draw the eye upward, while calligraphy and decorative details cover parts of the interior. The spacious hall has a calm atmosphere, even when the site is busy.

The courtyard is another place to pause. Its marble surfaces and surrounding architecture frame views over Cairo, so allow time to look beyond the building itself. Muhammad Ali Pasha is buried in a white marble tomb in the mosque courtyard.

Visiting with respect

This is a place of worship as well as a historic monument. Choose clothing that covers your arms and legs; coverings are available at no charge if you need one. Follow instructions at the entrance, including requests to leave backpacks outside. A Visa card is useful for ticket payment because cash may not be accepted.

The mosque is part of the wider Citadel complex, which also contains other historic mosques and museums. If you want to see the city in softer light, plan your visit toward sunset. Mild-weather months, including October and November and March to early May, are suggested for avoiding the more intense heat.
