Tadjoura is a small coastal town in northwestern Djibouti, on the Gulf of Tadjoura in the Horn of Africa. The Afar people have long lived in this region, and the town's mosques and waterfront give it a quieter feel than Djibouti City. The town is small enough to cover on foot.

Most visitors treat Tadjoura as a side trip from the capital, pairing time in town with the gulf and the lake country inland. The gulf is known for whale sharks, and boat trips leave from the coast. Lake Assal and Ghoubet al-Kharab are the two main day trips, both reached by 4x4. Expect heat for much of the year, so plan outdoor walks for early morning or late afternoon.
