Djibouti City

Djibouti City is the capital of Djibouti and a port on the Gulf of Tadjoura. Use it as a base for day trips to Lake Assal and the Day Forest.

Djibouti City is the capital of Djibouti, a small country on the Horn of Africa where the Red Sea meets the Gulf of Aden. The city sits on the Gulf of Tadjoura, and its port handles much of Ethiopia's trade, so the harbor is busy with cargo ships and trucks. French and Arabic are the official languages, and the city's street life still shows its past as a French colonial port.

A short stay suits the city. Spend time in the central market and along the harbor, where fish restaurants line the water. For the desert, take a day trip to Lake Assal, a salt lake and the lowest point in Africa, reached by 4x4 on rough tracks. Boat trips on the Gulf of Tadjoura depend on season and weather. The cooler months, roughly November to February, are the most comfortable, and summer is very hot. Two to three days covers the city, the Day Forest and one trip to Lake Assal.
