Skagen is a small town on the east coast of the Skagen Odde peninsula, in far northern Jutland. It is Denmark's northernmost town, about 41 km north of Frederikshavn and 108 km northeast of Aalborg, with about 7,250 inhabitants in January 2026. The town is best known for three things: Grenen, the northern tip of Denmark, where the Skagerrak and Kattegat meet and a visible line divides the two waters; the Skagen Painters' colony, whose best works are shown at Skagens Museum; and the fishing harbor, the country's main fishing port. Most houses are plastered yellow with red roofs.
The painters came in summer, drawn by the light and the fishermen. Råbjerg Mile is one of two large migrating dunes nearby. Only the tower of the Sand-Covered Church, a 14th-century church, still shows above the sand, about 4 km southwest of the center. Skagen is one of Europe's best bird-migration sites, and almost 400 of the roughly 500 species recorded in Denmark have been seen here. Birdwatchers visit in April to early June and again from August to November.
