Aalborg Zoo

Plan a visit to Aalborg Zoo: big cats, zebras, giraffes, penguins, a dinosaur exhibit and petting animals, plus tips on tickets and timing.

Aalborg Zoo sits a 15-minute walk from the centre of Aalborg in northern Denmark. Opened in 1935, it is home to more than 1,500 animals from around 126 species, grouped in areas that follow the regions where they live. Tigers and lions are a main draw, and the savannah area brings giraffes and zebras into view. The dinosaur exhibit, the petting area with young goats and the playground make it a good choice for families. The paths are clear, and the zoo is known for its conservation and breeding work.

How the zoo is laid out

Aalborg Zoo
Aalborg Zoo

Aalborg Zoo opened in 1935 and covers about 8 hectares. Its animals are grouped by the part of the world they come from, so a walk moves from one landscape to the next.

The savannah area brings giraffes, zebras, kudus and oryx together. Polar bears cool off in the water, and red pandas eat fresh bamboo. The enclosures are designed to resemble natural habitats as closely as possible, which lets you watch the animals in settings close to their own.

The paths are well laid out, and the map is easy to follow. The grounds rise on a hill, and a few raised spots give views over Aalborg and the surrounding countryside.

Conservation and the big cats

The zoo takes part in breeding programmes for endangered species and supports research and wildlife conservation. It is especially known for its Siberian tiger breeding programme, and it places weight on fair trade and animal welfare.

One of the best-known sessions is a feeding show, where staff break down the meat given to the big cats in view of visitors. It shows what these predators eat and how their diet fits into the wider ecosystem.

Staff are glad to talk about the animals and their stories. If you time your visit for feeding times in the summer months, you may see penguins, elephants, big cats and sea lions being fed.

Planning the visit

Allow at least three hours to see the main areas without rushing. The zoo has a playground for children, cafes and food outlets. If you want to keep costs down, you can bring your own food for the barbecue areas within the parkland.

Parking is in a grass lot just past the entrance. Benches are placed along the paths, which suits older visitors and families with small children. The entrance and the parking lot are wheelchair accessible.

Dogs are allowed in the zoo, including inside. There is a gender-neutral restroom on site.
