The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a large country in Central Africa and the second-largest in Africa by area, after Algeria. It straddles the Equator. Its capital, Kinshasa, sits on the Congo River directly across the water from Brazzaville, the capital of the neighboring Republic of the Congo. Kinshasa is the largest city and the economic center, and most trips start there. Do not confuse the two countries when you book flights or visas.
Travelers come for the Congo rainforest, the second-largest in the world after the Amazon, and for wildlife such as bonobos, which live in the wild only here. Mountain gorillas live in the east, where the glaciated Rwenzori Mountains and volcanoes such as Nyiragongo near Goma add to the scenery. Large parts of the east are unsafe and should be avoided. Travel is slow outside the capital, so a trip suits people who choose one region rather than several. Rainfall is high in many places, so check the season for each area you plan to visit, and confirm entry requirements with the embassy before you book.
Five things to know before Democratic Republic of Congo
- Read the advice for the east before anything else
The UK advises against all travel to North and South Kivu, Ituri, Haut-Uélé, Maniema, Tanganyika and Haut-Lomami, which covers Virunga and Goma. UK travel advice
- Apply for a visa weeks before travel
UK passport holders need a visa arranged before travel through a DRC embassy, and the UK advises allowing two to three weeks. Check the rule for other passports with a DRC embassy. Visas and entry
- Carry your yellow fever certificate
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required to enter the DRC. Carry the original certificate with your passport.
- Leave GPS units and military-style clothing at home
Travelers carrying satellite phones, GPS receivers or military clothing can have problems at entry. Never photograph soldiers, police or government buildings.
- Keep $55 for the departure tax
International departures carry a $55 tax and domestic flights $10, paid at check-in. Keep the cash ready before you reach the airport.
