Trinidad

Go to Trinidad for the cobbled streets and pastel houses of the old town, then take day trips to a sugar valley, a beach and the Escambray hills.

Trinidad is a colonial town on Cuba's south-central coast, in Sancti Spíritus province. Founded in 1514, its historic center has cobbled streets and low houses painted in pastel colors, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sugar money in the 19th century paid for many of the mansions and churches that still stand along those streets.

Day trips reach the Valle de los Ingenios, a valley of former sugar estates and mill towers. Playa Ancón is a short ride away for swimming, and Topes de Collantes, a park in the Escambray hills, has forest trails and cooler air. Trinidad suits travelers who want walking, museums and quiet evenings more than big resorts. November to April is the drier season and the most comfortable time to visit. Plan two or three nights for the town, and add a day or two for the valley and the beach.

  • Many foreign cards do not work in Cuba, and cards issued by US banks do not work either. Bring enough cash and check which currencies can be exchanged.
  • Cuban customs controls cigars and rum leaving the country. Keep receipts and check the current limits with Cuban customs before you buy.
