Hvar Town is a historic port on the south coast of Hvar island, in Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia. It is the largest settlement on the island. The town sits in a small bay facing south, and the Pakleni Islands shelter its harbor. Venetians founded it as a base in 1278, and their walls and public buildings still shape the old center. The Pjaca, the main square, is the largest in Dalmatia, and the Cathedral of St Stephen stands at its eastern end.
Yachts sailing the Adriatic often stop here in summer, and catamaran ferries link the town with Split, Brač, Korčula and Vis. The Hvar Theatre, which opened in 1612 on the first floor of the Arsenal, is one of the oldest in Europe. Spend a few days walking the old town and taking boat trips to nearby islands. The main tourist season runs from early April to mid-October, and the sea averages about 20 °C from June to October. The shoulder season before and after peak summer has the best sea and air temperatures.
