The Comoros is an archipelago of three main islands in the northern Mozambique Channel, between East Africa and Madagascar, with no land borders. The islands are Grande Comore (Ngazidja), Mohéli (Mwali) and Anjouan (Ndzwani), and Moroni, the capital, is on Grande Comore. Comorian, Arabic and French are official languages, and nearly all residents practise Sunni Islam, so modest dress is a sensible default in villages and mosques. The Comoros also claims Mayotte, a fourth island that remains a French overseas department, so expect the dispute to come up in conversation.
Travelers come for volcanic scenery and marine life. Karthala, an active volcano on Grande Comore, rises to 2,361 meters and holds the largest remaining rainforest patch in the Comoros. Marine parks protect coastal reefs, which have suffered from dynamite fishing, so choose responsible operators for snorkeling and diving. The cool, dry kusi season runs from May to October. The rainy kashkazi season, from November to April, brings cyclone risk. Allow extra time for travel, since services between and within the islands are limited.
Five things to know before Comoros
- Budget for the visa on arrival
UK passport holders need a visa, which can be bought on arrival at Hahaya airport and other ports of entry for 30 euros. Check the rule for other passports before you fly. Visas and entry
- Check passport validity
Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date.
- Dress modestly outside the beaches
The Comoros are conservative and mostly Muslim. Cover shoulders and knees in towns and villages, and ask before photographing people.
- Allow slack for inter-island travel
Flights and boats between Grande Comore, Mohéli and Anjouan run irregularly and change at short notice. Keep a buffer day before your flight out.
- Plan around Ramadan
During Ramadan many restaurants close by day and the pace slows. The dates move earlier each year, so check them before you book.
