Popayán is a city in southwestern Colombia and the capital of the Cauca department. It lies in the Cauca valley at about 1,700 meters above sea level, in the Andes. Spanish conquistador Sebastián de Belalcázar founded it in 1537, and it is known as the White City for the whitewashed colonial buildings in its center, many with red-tiled roofs.

Visitors usually come for the historic center, its churches and the old stone bridge Puente del Humilladero, and for Holy Week, when religious processions move through the streets. The city is also a university town, and its cooking includes pipián, a peanut-based dish. Popayán suits travelers who like walking, history and slow days, with the volcanic highlands and Indigenous markets of the Cauca region within reach for day trips. Plan two to three days. Holy Week, in March or April, is the busiest time to visit.
