Coffee Region

Green coffee hills, small painted towns and the tall wax palms of the Cocora Valley draw travelers who want a slower pace and a farm visit.

The Coffee Region, or Eje Cafetero, is the hilly part of west-central Colombia that covers the Caldas, Quindío and Risaralda departments. Travelers come for working coffee farms on steep green slopes, small towns with brightly painted facades, and the Cocora Valley, where the Quindío wax palm, Colombia's national tree, grows tall above the pastures. Salento is the usual base, a short ride from the valley trailheads. Filandia and Armenia are other options.

Pereira's Matecaña airport and Armenia's El Edén airport are the nearest flights, and buses and shared taxis run from both cities to the towns. Rain is common, and the area has two rainy seasons, so check the forecast before you book a trail. The region suits slow travelers, hikers and anyone who prefers a rural base to a big-city stay. Plan a few days so you can take a farm visit and a walk in the valley without rushing.

Coffee Region FAQ

How many days do I need in the Coffee Region?

Three to four days: one for Cocora, one for a coffee farm and Salento, and one for Filandia or the hot springs.

Is Salento or Filandia a better base?

Salento has more transport and is closer to Cocora. Filandia is quieter and less touristy, with buses to Salento.

When is coffee harvest in Colombia's Coffee Region?

There are two harvests, a main one in the second half of the year and a smaller one in spring. Farm tours run all year.

How do I get from Bogotá or Medellín to Salento?

Fly to Pereira or Armenia, then take a bus to Salento: about 1 hour from Armenia, a little more from Pereira. Overland buses from Bogotá or Medellín take most of a day, and mountain roads can slow them further.

What should I wear for the Cocora Valley hike?

Waterproof boots with grip, a rain jacket and a warm layer. Trails are muddy even in the drier months, so start early, before clouds and rain build in the afternoon.
