Plan a trip to Colombia

Ciudad Perdida, or the Lost City, is a pre-Columbian site in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in northern Colombia. The Tayrona people built its stone terraces, plazas and stairways on the mountain slopes, deep in the jungle. Local people knew of the site for centuries, but outsiders largely did not until the 1970s.

The ruins are the reward at the end of a multi-day trek through rainforest, with river crossings, steep sections and basic camps along the way. Most visitors go with a licensed guide from Santa Marta, and the trip suits hikers who can walk for several hours a day in heat and humidity and do not mind simple lodging. The best months are January, February, July and December, when the trail is driest and the rivers are easier to cross. Plan several days on the trail, plus time in Santa Marta before and after.
