Tianjin is a port city on the Bohai Sea in northern China, next to Beijing and Hebei. Its old core runs along the Hai River, and Binhai New Area stretches east to the coast. The city is known for 19th- and early 20th-century European buildings from its foreign concessions, many of them protected, standing beside modern glass and concrete towers. The main reasons to go are the concession streets, the river at night and the food, and Beijing is about 30 minutes away by high-speed train.

A day trip covers the river, the former concession streets and one or two museums. An overnight stay leaves time for Binhai and for a breakfast of jianbing guozi, a thin mung-bean pancake wrapped around fried dough sticks. Season changes the visit. Summers are hot and humid, with most rain in July and August. Winters are cold, windy and dry, and haze can build during the heating season. Sandstorms from the Gobi Desert can last several days in March and April.

  1. Match your Tianjin station to your planThe Beijing government says different trains reach different Tianjin stations. Its example is Beijingnan to Tianjinnan in 34 minutes, near the Tianjin Eye, Italian-Style Area, Wudadao and Ancient Culture Street.Beijing government guide
  2. Walk Wudadao and the Italian-style areaThe Beijing government describes Wudadao (Five Great Avenues) and the Italian-Style Area as places to read the city's history through Western-style architecture. Pair them in one slow afternoon.
  3. Eat the local classicsThe same guide names jianbing guozi and Goubuli steamed buns as local favorites. Use them as anchors for a food-led day rather than booking a long sit-down meal.
  4. Carry your passport for the rail legThe UK government says you must show your passport to buy a rail ticket and to board a train in China. Book on 12306 and keep the passport ready at the gate.UK safety advice

Tianjin FAQ

Is Tianjin worth a day trip from Beijing?

Yes for architecture and food. The Beijing government lists a 34-minute fast train to Tianjinnan, near the Italian-Style Area, Wudadao and Ancient Culture Street, so a day covers one or two districts without rushing.

How do you get from Beijing to Tianjin?

By high-speed train. The Beijing government's example is Beijingnan to Tianjinnan in 34 minutes, and other services call at different Tianjin stations, so check the station on your ticket against your plan.

What should I eat in Tianjin?

The Beijing government names jianbing guozi and Goubuli steamed buns as local favorites. Eat them near the old streets rather than at the station for the freshest versions.

Should I stay overnight in Tianjin?

Only if you want the evening streets or a slower pace. Most visitors manage the main sights in a day from Beijing, and a night adds time at the old architecture with fewer day-tour groups.

When is the best time to visit Tianjin?

Spring and autumn, meaning April, May, September and October. Winter is cold and dry, and July and August are hot with storms, so plan indoor stops for the afternoon heat.
