Zhengyangmen

Visit Zhengyangmen in Beijing to see its Ming-era gate and arrow tower, climb for city views, then explore nearby Qianmen Street.

Zhengyangmen, also called Qianmen, is a historic city gate at the southern end of Tiananmen Square in Beijing. Built during the Ming Dynasty, it once guarded the southern entrance to the Inner City. Its gate tower and separate arrow tower give the site its distinctive profile, and you can climb the tower for views over the city. Qianmen Street begins nearby, with shops and places to eat. The gate is especially striking after dark, when it is illuminated.

A southern gate to the Inner City

Zhengyangmen stands at the southern end of Tiananmen Square, where Qianmen Street meets the surrounding streets. Also known as Qianmen, it guarded the southern approach to Beijing’s Inner City and formed part of the city’s defensive system.

Construction began in 1419, during the Ming Dynasty. The gate was originally called Lizhengmen. After it was destroyed by fire in 1900, it was rebuilt in 1902. Its surviving structures offer a view of the way Beijing’s old city combined defense, access and ceremony.

The complex includes a gate tower, an arrow tower and a walled enclosure known as a wengcheng. The main tower has five archways, with a bell tower above it. The arrow tower stands opposite the gate tower and was used for defense.

You can climb the gate tower for views across Beijing. Take time to look at the two towers together: their different roles are easier to understand when seen as parts of the same defensive arrangement.

Continue along Qianmen Street

Qianmen Street, next to the gate, is a pedestrian area lined with shops and places to eat. It makes a natural continuation after seeing the historic structures, with the contrast between the old gate and the commercial street close at hand.

The illuminated gate is a popular subject for evening photographs. If you visit earlier, the late afternoon light is another option; an early start can bring fewer crowds.
