National Art Museum of China

Visit Beijing’s National Art Museum of China for traditional paintings, calligraphy and contemporary art. Admission is free with a ticket booked in advance.

At 1 Wusidajie in Beijing’s Dongcheng district, the National Art Museum of China brings traditional and contemporary Chinese art together in a large, multi-floor museum. Its galleries include painting, calligraphy, sculpture, photography and exhibitions by younger artists; displays change, so the works on view depend on your visit. Look for traditional paintings on the first floor and historical works on the upper floor. Admission is free, but arrange a ticket through the WeChat mini app and bring your passport for entry. Allow time for the galleries and outdoor sculptures near the café.

A collection across eras

National Art Museum of China

The National Art Museum of China opened in 1963. Its work centres on collecting, researching and exhibiting Chinese art, with displays spanning historical and contemporary works. The collection includes painting, sculpture, prints, photography and other forms, and encompasses both traditional and modern art.

The museum’s galleries bring different approaches and periods together. Traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy sit alongside contemporary work, while changing exhibitions add new subjects and artists. The programme has also included exhibitions featuring young artists, so the specific displays vary by visit.

How to explore the galleries

The museum occupies several floors, with exhibition halls dedicated to different displays. Traditional paintings are shown on the first floor, and historical Chinese paintings can be found on the upper floor. Other galleries may contain sculpture, calligraphy, photography or contemporary work. Check the current exhibitions before you go, as not every floor or gallery is necessarily open at the same time.

Allow enough time to follow the displays across the building. One account of a visit took about two and a half hours to see the free galleries, while a shorter visit covered the exhibition halls in around 30 minutes. Your time will depend on which galleries are open and how closely you want to look at the works.

The building and its setting

The main building draws on the form of traditional Chinese pavilions. Yellow glazed roof tiles, corridors and pavilions shape its exterior. Inside, large galleries include a central round gallery used for special exhibitions.

Outdoor sculptures near the café extend the visit beyond the indoor galleries. NAMOC Coffee is nearby if you want to take a break after seeing the exhibitions.

Tickets and entry

Admission is free, but visitors need to arrange a ticket in advance through the museum’s WeChat mini app. Bring your passport, which is required for entry. The museum is at 1 Wusidajie in Dongcheng, Beijing. Some exhibition explanations are not available in English, so the art itself may be easier to follow than its accompanying text.
