La Sebastiana Museo de Pablo Neruda

Tour Pablo Neruda's former hilltop home in Valparaíso with a self-guided audio guide, bay views and rooms full of his collections.

La Sebastiana is the former hilltop home of Pablo Neruda, the Chilean poet and Nobel Prize winner, on Cerro Bellavista above Valparaíso. It is now a museum, and its rooms recreate how the house looked during his life. Expect ship figureheads, nautical maps, 1950s furniture and artwork from his famous friends. A self-guided audio tour in several languages explains how he planned the house. The views over the bay give you a reason to linger, and the outdoor photo spots over the water are worth the time.

La Sebastiana sits on Cerro Bellavista, one of the hills above the port city of Valparaíso. Pablo Neruda, the Chilean poet and Nobel Prize winner, lived here, and the house is now a museum. It was one of three homes he kept in Chile.

He had the house built to his own ideas, and it took him about three years to finish. The house takes its name from one of his best-known poems. The outside is a mix of windows, stairs, skylights, railings, doors and hardware, so each part of the house looks different. Neruda liked to watch Valparaíso's New Year's fireworks from the top of the hill.

Inside the rooms

The rooms hold what Neruda gathered over the years: ship figureheads, nautical maps, antiques and artwork given to him by famous friends. Photographs show him with friends including Picasso and Diego Rivera.

The house draws on old ships and the sea, and that theme shows up in many of the rooms. The museum was renovated to recreate the house as it was during his life, and his personal belongings and collectibles were placed back among the original decor. The mix of 1950s furniture and avant-garde art gives each room a distinct character.

The audio tour and the views

The self-guided audio tour is offered in several languages. It follows his life and explains how he wanted the house built and what his antique collection means to the place. Listening as you move from room to room helps you read the objects.

From the windows you can see the bay and the city below. Many people spend as much time outside as inside, so leave room in your visit for photos over the water.

Getting there and on site

The museum is reached on foot from the main part of the city, and the last stretch is uphill. A free parking lot is listed. A restaurant is on site, so you can eat before or after your visit.

The house has stairs and narrow passages throughout. A wheelchair accessible elevator and restroom are listed, but the climbing inside is the main challenge for visitors with limited mobility.
