Chile's Lake District lies in the Los Lagos Region, about 1,000 kilometers south of Santiago. Volcanoes, including Osorno and Calbuco, rise above Lake Llanquihue, and the Andes slope down toward a chain of glacial lakes. Forest and farmland fill the land between the water and the peaks, and rain falls often here.
Puerto Varas and Frutillar are the usual bases, both settled by German-speaking families in the 19th century. Timber houses and bakeries serving kuchen still show that history. Puerto Montt, the regional hub, has the main airport and sits about 20 minutes by car from Puerto Varas. Plan at least three or four days for boat trips, volcano hikes and lakeside walks, and pack a waterproof layer in any season. Summer, from December to March, has the driest weather and the longest days.
