Elqui Valley is a river valley in the Coquimbo Region of northern Chile, running east from the Pacific coast toward the Andes. Vicuña is the main town and the usual base, while Pisco Elqui sits farther up the valley. Visitors come for pisco, the grape brandy made by small distilleries among the vineyards, and for the stargazing. The air is dry and the skies are clear for much of the year, and several observatories operate here.
The valley suits a slower trip with a few planned activities: pisco tastings, walks among orchards and vineyards, and a night under the stars. Plan at least two or three nights so you are not rushing between tours. Days are warm and dry, while nights can be cold, so pack layers. Gabriela Mistral, the poet and Nobel laureate, was born in Vicuña. The usual route in is by road from La Serena.

Read the guideElqui Valley FAQ
Is the Elqui Valley worth visiting?
Yes, for two or three nights. Vineyards, pisco distilleries, the Mistral sites in Montegrande and clear skies for stargazing fill that time well.
How do you get from La Serena to the Elqui Valley?
By bus or car, about 1.5 hours to Vicuña on the valley road. Book a transfer or a car if you land late.
How many days do you need in the Elqui Valley?
Two nights cover Vicuña, Montegrande and one distillery day. Add a third night so a cloudy evening does not cancel your stargazing.
Where should I stay in the Elqui Valley?
Vicuña for buses, shops and a town base. Pisco Elqui for quiet nights and tastings, and Montegrande if you want Mistral's village and small stays.
Do I need a car in the Elqui Valley?
Not always. Buses run through the valley, but a car lets you stop at vineyards and observatories on your own timing.
Can I visit the Elqui Valley as a day trip from La Serena?
Possible, but tight: the drive is about 1.5 hours each way and leaves little time for a tasting or a night tour. Stay overnight for the stars.
Will I see the stars every night?
No. Clouds can cancel a session. Book a spare night and ask the tour operator what happens if the sky is closed.
