Concepción is the main city of the Biobío Region in south-central Chile, about 500 kilometers south of Santiago. It sits on the Biobío River, a short drive from the Pacific, and forms one metro area of roughly one million people with the port of Talcahuano. The University of Concepción gives the center a large student population. Carriel Sur airport serves the city.
Most travelers use Concepción as a base for the coast, the seafood and day trips into the Biobío countryside. The city is more practical than scenic, so two or three days is enough for most visits, with the coast and nearby towns as the main outings. Trains and buses run between the center and Talcahuano. December to February suits beach days and long evenings, while spring and autumn are milder for walking the city.
