Chilean Patagonia is the southern part of Chile, running from the lakes and fjords of Los Lagos and Aysén down to Magallanes, around Punta Arenas. Its best-known landmark is Torres del Paine National Park, where granite towers rise above lakes and glacier-fed rivers. Most trips to the park start from Puerto Natales. Nearby, glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field reach lakes and fjords, and the Carretera Austral road runs through the valleys and fjords of Los Lagos and Aysén.
The region suits hikers, road-trip drivers and wildlife watchers who are comfortable with long distances and changing weather. Towns are small and far apart, services thin out away from the main hubs, and wind often blows hard on open ground. Summer, roughly November through March, is the main season, when days are longest and most lodging and tours operate. Plan at least a week to see one area well, or two weeks to link Magallanes with Aysén.

How many days do you need for Torres del Paine?
Three days covers the main viewpoints from one base. The W trek takes about four to five days, and the full circuit takes longer. A day trip from Puerto Natales is possible but leaves little time at the lakes.
Is Puerto Natales the best base for Torres del Paine?
Yes for most visitors. It has many hostels, hotels and tour offices, and it is about 2 hours from the park gate. Punta Arenas is about 3 to 4 hours by bus from Puerto Natales, so it suits a split stay only if you have the time.
How do you get from Puerto Natales to Torres del Paine?
By bus to the park gate in about 2 hours, or on a booked tour that includes transport. Buses run seasonally, so check timetables before you plan the trek. Book seats early in peak season.
When is the best time to visit Chilean Patagonia?
November to March for longer days and the trekking season. December to February is the busiest time, so book ahead. From May to August it is cold, and many refuges and services close.
Is Chilean Patagonia worth it without hiking?
Yes, if you want glaciers, lakes and viewpoints from a road or a boat. Day tours and short walks cover much of the scenery. Cueva del Milodón is about 30 minutes from Puerto Natales by road.
Do I need a visa for Chile?
Many passports need no visa for short tourist stays. Check your passport on the migration service website before you fly, since the rules depend on your nationality.
