Chad

Chad is a landlocked country in north-central Africa that people visit for Ennedi Plateau rock art, Lake Chad's wetlands and the wildlife of Zakouma National Park.

Chad is a landlocked country in north-central Africa, bordered by Libya, Sudan, the Central African Republic, Cameroon, Nigeria and Niger. Its capital, N'Djamena, sits where the Chari and Logone rivers meet. The north is Sahara desert, with the Tibesti Mountains and the Ennedi Plateau, which has rock formations and ancient rock art. Zakouma National Park, in the south-east, covers about 3,000 km² and is a major wildlife reserve. Lake Chad, which gives the country its name, is a shrunken remnant of a much larger lake.

Plan around the seasons. The rainy season runs from May to October in the south and June to September in the Sahel, and many roads are impassable for months during it. The cool dry season, December to February, has daytime temperatures of about 20 to 30°C. From March the heat builds, and daytime averages in N'Djamena exceed 38°C from March to June. Choose one region for the trip, since the north is desert and the south has wetlands and savannas.

Five things to know before Chad

  1. Check how to apply for the visa

UK passport holders need a visa before travel, and the UK page lists Chadian embassies in Belgium and France. Check Chad's official e-Visa platform for the current way to apply for your passport. Chad e-Visa portal

  2. Read the travel advice for your route

The UK advises against all travel to the north, the Lake Chad area and within 30 km of most borders, and against all but essential travel elsewhere. UK travel advice

  3. Register with the police after 72 hours

If you stay more than 72 hours you must register with the police in person, with a passport photo. Tour operators often handle it.

  4. Book Zakouma through the park's lodges

Zakouma is visited on organized stays, typically in the dry months from about December to May. Book the flight and camp together.

  5. Carry a yellow fever certificate

UK advice says a yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive from a country with transmission risk. Carry your certificate and ask a travel clinic about Chad itself.
