Ward's Island Beach

Plan a visit to Ward’s Island Beach in Toronto for calm lake swimming, harbour and skyline views, and a quieter stretch of sand reached by ferry.

Ward’s Island Beach is a quieter stretch of sand on Toronto Islands, reached by ferry from the city. From the Ward’s Island dock, it is about a five-minute walk to the beach. The calm lake water is suited to a swim, and the shoreline gives you views of the Toronto skyline and ships in the harbour. Bring a towel for a relaxed day by the water, or add a walk or bike ride through the island community. You can also stop at the nearby Island Restaurant for food, drinks or ice cream.

Getting to the beach

Ward’s Island Beach is part of the Toronto Islands, a short ferry ride from the city. From the Ward’s Island dock, the walk to the sand takes about five minutes. The beach is close to the terminal, so you can make it a simple swim stop or use it as the start of a longer island visit.

The island is easy to explore on foot, and bringing a bicycle lets you cover more ground. Paths lead past homes and small artistic museums set along the island streets. There are also trails and places to pause beneath trees. Weekdays tend to be quieter at the beach than weekends.

Swimming and time by the water

The water is clear and cool, and the beach’s position offers some shelter from the open lake. Conditions can feel cold earlier in the season; summer swimming is a better fit if you prefer warmer water. The shoreline is also known for beach glass carried in by currents, so take a slow walk along the sand if you want to look for it.

There are benches and other places to sit, including fallen trees, but shade is limited. Pack sun protection and what you need for a day outdoors. Amenities include public washrooms, a shower, a lifeguard, a volleyball court and wheelchair-accessible entrance. A nearby playground makes the area useful for a family outing, and grassy picnic areas give you another place to spread out.

Ward’s Island and its history

Ward’s Island grew from a community shaped by fishing and seasonal life. David Ward, a fisherman, settled with his family on the eastern end of the peninsula in the early 1830s. A storm in 1858 separated the peninsula from the mainland, creating an island.

The area later became a summer resort and then a residential community. Early homes began as tents and developed into cottages. Today, the beach sits beside that island neighbourhood, so a visit can include a walk along its small streets as well as time by the lake. The Island Restaurant is another stop in the area, with meals, snacks, cocktails, beer and ice cream.
