Tofino is a small town at the western end of Highway 4, on the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Most visitors come for Long Beach, a beach inside Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and close to town, along with surfing, hiking, camping, bird watching, whale watching and fishing. The 2021 census counted about 2,516 residents, but summer visitors and seasonal workers swell the population to many times that winter size. Highway 4 links the town with Port Alberni, and floatplanes land on the inlet in the town centre.
Weather shapes any visit. Summer is the best-known season for surfing and is relatively dry, though it is still wetter than the BC interior. Coastal fog is common on summer mornings and can delay flights into Tofino-Long Beach Airport, which lies about 11 km southeast of town. Rain is heavy from autumn through winter, and winter storms often bring very wet weather as they roll in over the ocean.

How long does it take to drive to Tofino?
Parks Canada lists Long Beach drive times of about 3.5 hours from Nanaimo, 2.5 from Parksville and 2 from Port Alberni, on a steep, twisting 108 km highway. From Vancouver, add the BC Ferries crossing to Nanaimo.
Is Tofino worth it in winter?
Yes for storm watching: Parks Canada highlights storm watching on Long Beach. Expect cold rain and rough water, and check the weather and marine forecasts that the park lists before beach walks.
Do you need a car in Tofino?
Practically yes. The beach lots, trailheads and villages are spread along the highway, and the drive in is the main way to reach the area. Book a rental before the ferry crossing.
When can you hike the West Coast Trail?
Parks Canada lists the West Coast Trail as open May 1 to September 30, with reservations recommended. Trailheads sit near Bamfield and Port Renfrew, not near Tofino, so plan the transfers.
Is it better to stay in Tofino or Ucluelet?
Tofino has more dining and tours; Ucluelet is quieter and often cheaper. Parks Canada places the Long Beach Unit between the two villages, so either base reaches the same beaches by car.
