Saskatchewan is a landlocked province in the middle of Canada, with Alberta to the west and Manitoba to the east. Open grassland in the south gives way to farmland through the middle, then lakes and boreal forest in the north. Regina, the capital, and Saskatoon, the largest city, are the two main urban centers. Near Saskatoon, Wanuskewin Heritage Park protects archaeological sites and tells the story of Northern Plains Indigenous peoples across thousands of years.

Distances are long, so one or two bases work better than a loop of every park. Grasslands National Park lies in the south and Prince Albert National Park in the north, so pick the one that fits your route. Summer, June through August, suits camping, hiking and driving. Winter is cold, with snow.

    Saskatchewan FAQ

What is Saskatchewan best known for?

Prairie landscapes, wide skies and two main cities, Regina and Saskatoon, plus parks from Grasslands in the south to Prince Albert National Park in the central boreal forest, per Parks Canada.

How many days do you need in Saskatchewan?

Three to five days cover Saskatoon, Regina and one park. Seven days let you add Prince Albert National Park or Grasslands, since driving distances between sights are long.

Is Wanuskewin a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Not yet. Wanuskewin's own site says it is one of Canada's proposed UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and describes its work on Northern Plains Indigenous cultures. Treat the status as pending until UNESCO inscribes it.

Do you need a car in Saskatchewan?

Yes for parks and anything outside the two cities. Public transport between sights is thin, and distances are long, so hire a car or book guided tours.

Can you fly a drone in Saskatchewan parks?

Not in Parks Canada places. Parks Canada says all of its places, including Grasslands National Park, are no-drone zones for recreational use. Check provincial park rules separately.
