How to choose a base in Ottawa

Ottawa is compact, and the sights that most visitors want sit within a few kilometers of each other. The Ottawa travel guide covers the city in full, and the Canada guide covers the rest of Canada. For a first visit the answer is downtown near Parliament Hill. Choose the ByWard Market if dinner and late evenings matter, the Glebe and Dow's Lake for the tulips or the canal in winter, and Gatineau if the Canadian Museum of History is the main plan.

Three questions narrow the choice. The first is the season, because the city has two peak moments that shape where you want to be. The Rideau Canal Skateway usually runs from January to early March, per the National Capital Commission, and the Canadian Tulip Festival fills Commissioners Park at Dow's Lake in May. The second is how you move: Ottawa works well on foot and by bus, and a car adds parking charges more than convenience. The third is what you plan to do in the evening, since downtown offices empty out after hours, while the Market stays busy.

A single $ below means a simple hotel, two a mid-range or apartment-style stay and three an upscale hotel, per double room. Rates follow Parliament's calendar, festivals and conferences, so none are quoted; check the total with taxes and parking at booking.

Numbers match the sections below.

Downtown is the practical center. Parliament Hill is at 111 Wellington Street, where the Parliament of Canada lists the West Block tours of the House of Commons and the East Block tours in summer. The Senate of Canada Building, in the former Ottawa train station, and the Immersive Experience at 211 Sparks Street are also close. The Rideau Canal locks, the water taxi jetty at the Ottawa Locks and the Skateway access points are within a short walk, so a hotel here lets you plan a day around the sights without a bus.

The cost is atmosphere. Downtown near the Hill is an office and government district, and some blocks are quiet on weekend evenings. Hotels range from large business properties to historic buildings, and parking is usually an extra charge, which suits a visit without a car. If you plan a Parliament tour, book the tickets first and the room second, since Parliament says same-day tickets may not be available and House of Commons tours do not run when the House is sitting.

Choose it for first visits, for two to three nights and for anyone who wants to walk to Parliament, the canal and the museums. Skip it if you want a lively street at night.

Skip if you want dinner and late evenings on your doorstep. The ByWard Market has far more of both.

Choose downtown for a first visit of two to three nights, with Parliament on foot.

2. ByWard Market

The ByWard Market district lies just east of the canal and northeast of the Hill. It is the part of the city where restaurants, pubs and shops cluster, and where a night out is easiest without a car. A hotel here is a short walk from Parliament Hill and from the Rideau Canal, so the tradeoff against downtown is mostly noise and a slightly more casual setting.

Properties include boutique hotels, apartment-style rentals and a few larger hotels. That mix suits couples and small groups who want character, but it also means rooms can be smaller. Weekend nights can be loud, so ask for an upper floor or a courtyard room if you sleep lightly. In summer, patios fill and the streets are busy late. In winter, the area is quieter and a walk to the canal on a cold night is a pleasant way to end the day.

Choose it for food-led trips, for couples and for stays of two to four nights. Skip it if you need a quiet room and an early night.

Skip if you need silence at night. Downtown offices and the Glebe are quieter after dark.

3. The Glebe and Dow's Lake

Best for
Tulips, Skateway, quiet stays
Walk to
Canal and Dow's Lake

South of downtown, the canal runs through residential neighborhoods and along Dow's Lake. This is the base for two seasonal events. The Canadian Tulip Festival is held in Commissioners Park at Dow's Lake, where its site describes a self-guided Tulip Trail and a 1.2 km park with 26 gardens. In winter, the NCC describes a packed-snow walking lane alongside the Skateway from Lakeview to Dow's Lake, and the Skateway itself winds through the heart of the capital over 7.8 km, so a base here puts you at the quieter southern end of the ice.

The trade-off is distance from the Hill. The walk or ride into downtown takes longer than from the central bases, and a bus or taxi may be useful on cold nights. Hotels are fewer, and many guests choose guesthouses or apartment rentals. Check the exact address against the canal and the nearest access point if the Skateway is your reason for coming, because the walk across a frozen canal is part of the day.

Choose it for the tulips in May, for skaters who like a quieter start and for longer stays. Skip it if you want to walk to Parliament.

Skip if you plan to walk to Parliament Hill every day. Downtown or the Market is closer.

Stay here for quieter streets and a longer stay near The Glebe and Dow's Lake.

4. Gatineau

Best for
Museum days, budgets

Gatineau is the Quebec city across the Ottawa River. The Canadian Museum of History stands on its bank at 100 Laurier Street, directly opposite Parliament Hill, and says it is reached from downtown Ottawa on foot, by bike, by bus, by car and by water taxi in summer. A hotel here puts the museum and the river path at your door and keeps you close to the Voyageurs Pathway, which the museum places steps from its entrance. French is the main language, and most services switch to English easily.

The trade-off is the crossing. Ottawa's restaurants, the Hill and the canal sit across the river, so evenings mean a bus, a taxi or a long walk, and in winter that matters. Hotels are fewer, and many travelers choose Gatineau for value or for a museum-heavy trip. If you plan to use the museum's timed tickets, note that the museum says every visitor needs a timed ticket, regardless of age and day.

Choose it for museum days and for budget stays. Skip it if you want Ottawa's evening scene and Skateway access on foot.

Skip if you want Parliament Hill and the canal at your door. Downtown on the Ontario side is closer.

A good pick for museum days, with a river crossing to Ottawa.

Which base for which trip?

A first visit of two to three nights belongs downtown. The Hill, the canal and the museums are close, and the transfer from the airport is simple: the Ottawa airport lists taxis, public transportation, airport shuttle and rideshare on Level 1. A food-led trip suits the ByWard Market, which keeps dinner on foot. A trip built around the tulips or the Skateway suits the Glebe and Dow's Lake, where the canal and the park sit at the edge of the neighborhood. A museum-heavy trip with a tight budget suits Gatineau.

Couples often do best with one night in the Market and one downtown, while families usually prefer a single base that avoids moving luggage. A traveler combining Ottawa with the rest of the region can use the guide to the Thousand Islands and Kingston for the road east of the capital, and Montréal for the city beyond. If the plan is two days, the page on Ottawa in 2 days shows how a base shapes the route.

Winter, tulips and event dates

Two events decide the booking order. Canadian Heritage lists the 49th Winterlude as January 29 to February 15, 2027, and the NCC says the Rideau Canal Skateway usually runs from January to early March, weather permitting. Winterlude is a flagship winter event in the capital region, so rooms near the canal go early. The Skateway and Winterlude guide explains how to plan around the ice.

In spring, the Canadian Tulip Festival ran May 8 to 18 in 2026, and its site describes Commissioners Park at Dow's Lake as the main site. The 2027 dates were not published on the page checked, so confirm them before you book a room. Both events reward early booking. A flexible rate is the safest choice for the Skateway, since the ice depends on the weather and the season can start late or end early.

Getting around from each base

Downtown and the Market are walkable to the Hill, the canal locks and the Sparks Street area. The Parliament of Canada says to allow time to move between buildings and pass through security screening, which may include registration and scanning, so leave a margin between a tour and a museum slot. From the Glebe, a bus, a taxi or a long walk along the canal reaches downtown. From Gatineau, the Museum of History says it is reachable by OC Transpo or the Société de transport de l'Outaouais, by bike on the pathway, on foot, by car or by the summer water taxi.

The water taxi is a useful link. The museum describes it as shuttling between the Ottawa Locks jetty downtown and the museum, with a stop at Richmond Landing near the Canadian War Museum. It runs in summer, so check the season before you count on it.

Booking tips for Ottawa

Book early for Winterlude, for tulip season and for any week when Parliament is sitting, and ask for a flexible rate if your plans depend on the ice or the bloom. Midweek rooms are often easier to find than weekend ones. Check what the rate includes, because parking, breakfast and resort-style fees vary by property, and confirm the bed type if you travel in a group. Parliament says visitors aged 16 and over need government-issued photo ID to enter West Block, so carry it on the day.

Coming from overseas? Read the Canada eTA guide before you book flights, then set up data with the connectivity guide. Once the base is set, the Ottawa travel guide shows what to do with the days, and Kingston is the next stop along the Rideau route.

FAQ

What is the best area to stay in Ottawa for a first visit?

Downtown near Parliament Hill. The Hill is at 111 Wellington Street, the Immersive Experience is at 211 Sparks Street, and the Rideau Canal locks are close. The trade-off is that downtown is quieter on weekend evenings than the Market.

Is it better to stay in Ottawa or Gatineau?

Ottawa for most visitors, since the sights and restaurants are on the Ontario side. Gatineau works if you want the Canadian Museum of History at your door and fewer high-priced rooms, and the museum says buses link the two cities.

Where should you stay for the Rideau Canal Skateway?

Downtown or the Glebe, near an access point. The NCC says the 7.8 km Skateway usually runs January to early March, and has a packed-snow walking lane from Lakeview to Dow's Lake, so a base near the southern canal suits skaters.

Where should you stay for the Tulip Festival?

The Glebe or near Dow's Lake, since the festival is in Commissioners Park at Dow's Lake. The 2026 festival ran May 8 to 18, so check the festival site for 2027 dates before booking.

Do you need a car if you stay in Ottawa?

No for the central bases. Sights are close on foot, and the Museum of History is reached by bus, on foot or bike, or by summer water taxi. The airport lists taxis, public transport, shuttles and rideshare on Level 1.
