Gitega is Burundi's political capital, in the center of the country, on a broad plateau surrounded by hills at about 1,504 m. It lies roughly 62 km east of Bujumbura, which remains the economic capital and commercial hub. Gitega was the royal capital of the Kingdom of Burundi until the kingdom was abolished in 1966, so royal history shapes most of what there is to see.

The National Museum of Gitega holds collections on history, culture and traditional tools. Nearby sites include the ibwami, the old royal court, and several karyenda royal drum sanctuaries. Gishora, another ancient royal court, lies on National Road 15 north of the city. Ruvubu National Park, Burundi's largest, is about 26 km east. Days are warm and nights cool. The city is reached by road because its airport is no longer in use.
