Bobo-Dioulasso

Bobo-Dioulasso is a city in southwest Burkina Faso known for its mud-brick Grand Mosque, its old quarters and its music. It also works as a base for day trips into the southwest.

Bobo-Dioulasso is the second-largest city in Burkina Faso, in the southwest of the country. Its best-known building is the Grand Mosque, made of mud brick with wooden beams that stick out from the walls. The Dioulassoba quarter, one of the older parts of town, has narrow streets of traditional houses, courtyards and markets. The city is also known for its music.

Two or three days cover the old quarters and the mosque. Dolo, a sorghum beer, and tô, a millet porridge, are everyday foods you will find in local bars and family courtyards. The dry season, roughly November to February, is the most comfortable time to walk around. The hot months before the rains are much harder going. From the city, the Sindou Peaks and the Banfora area are day trips by road.
