Casa das Rosas

Visit Casa das Rosas in São Paulo, a 1935 mansion turned poetry and literature center, with historic interiors, exhibitions and a garden café.

Casa das Rosas is a cultural center for poetry and literature in a 1935 mansion on Avenida Paulista, at number 37 in Bela Vista. Designed by architect Ramos de Azevedo for his daughter, the French-style house is one of the avenue’s few remaining early-20th-century homes. Look for historic photographs, decorative ceilings and tiled floors, then stroll through the garden. Exhibitions and cultural events bring the building’s literary purpose into focus, while the garden café makes a quiet pause from the city streets.

Casa das Rosas

Casa das Rosas was built in 1935 by Ramos de Azevedo for one of his daughters. Its French-style design and garden inspired by the gardens of the Palace of Versailles set it apart from the office towers and commercial buildings along Avenida Paulista. The same family lived in the house until 1986, when it became a municipal landmark.

The mansion is one of the few early-20th-century homes left on the avenue. Inside, historic photographs, tiled floors and decorative plaster ceiling details offer glimpses of the building’s domestic past. Take time to look closely at the house’s craftsmanship as you move between the rooms.

Since 2004, the house has been a cultural center for poetry, literature and the arts. It is dedicated to the work and bibliographic collection of poet Haroldo de Campos, and hosts exhibitions and cultural events. Check what is on during your visit, as the program can give you a reason to return beyond the historic rooms.

Outside, the garden offers a quieter setting beside one of São Paulo’s busiest avenues. The number of roses in bloom depends on the season; spring and summer are the suggested times to visit for more flowers. A café sits in the garden area, providing a place to stop before continuing along Avenida Paulista.
