Lençóis is a small town in the Chapada Diamantina region of Bahia, in northeastern Brazil, and a common base for trips into the mountains. The town grew up around diamond mining in the 19th century, and its old streets of colorful colonial houses still reflect that past. Around it, rock mountains, canyons and waterfalls fill the landscape. Travelers stay in town to hike, swim in rivers and visit caves in the national park and nearby areas.
Lençóis suits trips built around the outdoors more than city sightseeing. Plan at least three to five days to split your time between the town and day trips, and add more if you want longer treks in the national park. The drier months, roughly May to September, are the usual choice for hiking. In the rainy season, trails can turn muddy and rivers can run high, so ask your guide about trail conditions before you set out.
