Foz do Iguaçu

Travelers come for Iguazu Falls, one of the world's largest waterfall systems, and for the view of it from both the Brazilian and Argentine sides.

Foz do Iguaçu is a city in the state of Paraná in southern Brazil, where the Iguaçu River meets the Paraná River and the borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay come together. Most travelers come for Iguazu Falls, a set of about 270 waterfalls along the border with Argentina's Iguazú National Park. The Brazilian side gives wide views across the falls, while the Argentine side brings you close to the water on walkways, including the trail to the Devil's Throat.

The Itaipu Dam, on the Paraná River, is one of the largest hydroelectric plants in the world and is shared with Paraguay. You can combine the falls with a visit to the dam and a day trip to Argentina. Two or three days is enough for a focused trip. Visit in the warmer, wetter months, roughly December to March, when the water runs highest, or in the drier, cooler months from May to September, when the air is less humid and the trails are easier to walk.

Foz do Iguaçu in five

  1. Choose the Brazilian side for the wide viewThe Brazilian park gives a wide panorama of the falls, while the Argentine side has walkways that reach close to the water and the Devil's Throat. The Argentine side needs a border crossing, so a short trip is better spent on one side.
  2. Carry your passport on both bridgesThe Tancredo Neves bridge runs to Argentina and the Friendship Bridge runs to Paraguay, and both have passport checks, so a photocopy will not do. Check your nationality's visa rules for each country before you cross.Visas and entry
  3. Declare Ciudad del Este purchases at customsBrazil sets a duty-free allowance per traveller and taxes goods above it, so keep receipts and check the Receita Federal limits before you buy electronics in Ciudad del Este.
  4. Carry small reais for buses and kiosksKeep small notes and coins for bus fares and kiosks, and do not count on a card at every stall.
  5. Wear grip shoes for wet walkways and spraySpray keeps the falls walkways and steps damp, and some platforms sit close to the water. Closed shoes with grip matter more than sandals.

Foz do Iguaçu FAQ

Is Foz do Iguaçu worth visiting?

Yes, for two or three days built around the falls, the Itaipu Dam and a border day trip. It is a weak choice if you want a beach or a city with long nightlife.

Which side of Iguazu Falls is better?

The Brazilian side is better for wide views across the falls, and the Argentine side is better for walkways close to the water. Two days lets you see both, but the Argentine side needs a border crossing.

How many days do you need in Foz do Iguaçu?

Two days covers the Brazilian side and one other outing. Add a third day if you want both the falls on each side and the Itaipu Dam.

Can you visit Iguazu Falls without a car?

Yes, by bus, taxi or a falls tour from the city. A car helps if you want to stop at several viewpoints in one day.

Do you need a visa for Brazil?

It depends on your passport. Many nationalities enter visa-free, while others need an e-visa, so check the official Brazil e-visa list before you book.

Is Ciudad del Este worth a trip?

It is a shopping day trip across the Friendship Bridge, not a sightseeing city. Keep receipts, check Brazilian customs limits, and keep valuables close.
