Florianópolis is the capital of Santa Catarina, a state on Brazil's southern coast. Most of the city sits on Santa Catarina Island, which is linked to the mainland by bridges. The island has dozens of beaches, from calm bays to open surf breaks. Lagoa da Conceição, a large lagoon with restaurants and bars along its shore, draws windsurfers and visitors who want a quieter base than the seafront beaches.
Seafood is central to local cooking, including oysters and mullet, long fished off the island's coast. The historic village of Santo Antônio de Lisboa, settled in the 18th century by families from the Azores, keeps older fishing-town streets and houses. The city suits surfers, beach lovers, food-focused travelers and couples. Summer, from December to February, brings the most beach weather and the most crowds, while autumn and spring are milder. Plan four to five days to cover the main beaches, the lagoon and the old village.

Is Florianópolis worth visiting?
Yes, for beaches, a lagoon town and surf. The city sits on an island joined to the mainland by bridges, and it has Azorean-influenced villages to the north and south. It suits a relaxed beach trip better than a big-city stop.
How many days do you need in Florianópolis?
Four or five days covers two or three beaches, the lagoon and a day trip to a fishing village. Add a day if you want to surf or see the coast south of the island.
Which beaches are best in Florianópolis?
Joaquina and Campeche are the best known for surf, with long sand and dunes at Joaquina. Praia Mole is small and popular with surfers. Lagoa da Conceição suits swimming and paddling in calmer water.
Do you need a car in Florianópolis?
Not for the center or Lagoa, but a car makes beach days and the fishing village easier. Buses reach many beaches, though they are slower in summer traffic.
Is Florianópolis safe for tourists?
Use the same care you would in any city. Keep valuables out of sight on the beach, and use app-based rides or registered taxis after dark.
When is the best time to visit Florianópolis?
March to May and October are mild and quieter, with fewer crowds on the beaches. December to February is the busiest and hottest season. July brings school holiday crowds.
