Curitiba is the capital of Paraná, a state in southern Brazil, and known for its urban planning. Go for the bus rapid transit system, the public parks and the historic center, where pedestrian streets run through the old core. Landmarks include the Museu Oscar Niemeyer, a modernist building nicknamed the Eye Museum, and the Botanical Garden with its glass greenhouse. Italian, German, Polish and Ukrainian immigrants shaped the local food and traditions.

Curitiba suits a city break of two or three days. Spend time in the parks and museums, eat at a local restaurant, and take a day trip to Morretes, a small town on the old route to the coast. The drive to Morretes takes about 1 to 1.5 hours by car. Spring and autumn, roughly September to November and March to May, are the most comfortable months for walking. Winter is cooler, and summer is hot and wetter.

  2. Download Portuguese and offline maps before you landMenus, bus signs and most shop staff use Portuguese. Save an offline translation pack and offline maps before you fly.
  3. Check the restaurant bill for the service chargeMany restaurants add a 10% service charge to the bill, and an extra tip is optional. Read the total before you pay by card.Money and costs
  4. Pack a rain jacket all yearCuritiba gets rain in every month. The city sits at about 900 m above sea level, so evenings are cool. A compact umbrella and a light jacket cover most days.
  5. Visit the Largo da Ordem on a Sunday morningThe Largo da Ordem square holds a Sunday fair of crafts and antiques in the Centro. Plan your Sunday walk around it.

Curitiba FAQ

Is Curitiba worth visiting?

Yes, for the Museu Oscar Niemeyer, the Botanical Garden and the bus network, and as a base for Morretes and Vila Velha State Park. It is a weak choice for beaches or a nightlife trip.

How many days do you need in Curitiba?

Two full days cover the Centro, the Botanical Garden and the Museu Oscar Niemeyer. Add a third day for Morretes or Vila Velha State Park, since each needs most of a day by car.

Is Curitiba safe for tourists?

Use the same care as in any large Brazilian city: keep to busy streets after dark, use a registered taxi or ride app at night, and keep bags closed on buses.

Do you need Portuguese in Curitiba?

Not strictly, but menus, bus signs and most shop staff use Portuguese. Learn a few phrases and save an offline translator before you fly.

Is Iguaçu Falls close to Curitiba?

No. Iguaçu is about a 1-hour flight away, too far for a day trip from Curitiba. Plan it as a separate leg of the trip.
