Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida

Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida

Visit Brasília’s Catedral Metropolitana, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, for its bright glass-roofed nave, suspended angels and crown-shaped exterior.

Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated in 1970, the Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida is a Roman Catholic cathedral on Brasília’s Esplanada dos Ministérios. Its 16 curving concrete columns form a crown-like silhouette, while the main worship space lies below ground level. Enter through a darkened passage to find a bright interior beneath a glass roof, with suspended angel sculptures and stained glass. The cathedral is known for clear acoustics, too. Visit by day to see the interior and underground baptistery, then return after dark to view the illuminated exterior.

A cathedral shaped by Niemeyer

Oscar Niemeyer designed the Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida as part of Brasília’s planned city. The Roman Catholic cathedral was completed and dedicated in 1970. Its circular form and curved concrete columns give it a crown-like outline, setting it apart from the government buildings on the Esplanada dos Ministérios.

The structure has 16 concrete columns, each weighing 90 tons. Seen from outside, the roof and columns define the building’s distinctive profile. The cathedral serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Brasília.

Entering the sunken nave

The entrance leads through a darkened passage before opening into the bright main worship space. Much of the cathedral sits below ground level, so the building’s exterior gives only a partial sense of its scale inside. Glass overhead brings natural light into the nave, and some panels catch reflections from water outside.

The interior includes stained glass and sculptures of angels suspended above the congregation. The statues of the Four Evangelists stand at the entrance. The restrained palette and open space keep attention on the light, forms and religious art.

Sound and spaces below ground

The cathedral is known for its clear acoustics: sound can carry from one end of the building to the other even when spoken softly. It is a distinctive part of the interior experience, alongside the height and openness created by the glass roof.

The underground area includes a baptistery. A daytime visit gives you the chance to explore this quieter space as well as the main nave. The cathedral is a place of worship, so follow the dress guidance and be considerate of people who are there to pray.

Seeing the cathedral in different light

Daylight reveals the stained glass and the contrast between the shadowed entrance and the luminous interior. After dark, the exterior has a different character when illuminated. If your schedule allows, seeing the building at both times gives you two distinct views of Niemeyer’s design.
