Museu Histórico Abílio Barreto

Explore Belo Horizonte’s history through archival objects, an outdoor transport display and a preserved colonial farmhouse at this Cidade Jardim museum.

Museu Histórico Abílio Barreto traces the story of Belo Horizonte from its origins in Cidade Jardim. Its collection includes historical objects, photographs and documents, while the grounds add an outdoor transport display and a preserved colonial farmhouse. Visit all three areas to see the city’s past through its archives, vehicles and one of its oldest surviving buildings. The gardens also provide a quiet place to pause, and a stage hosts occasional concerts.

The museum is housed in a preserved colonial farmhouse associated with the period before Belo Horizonte was built. The building stood in the area known as Curral d’El Rey, farmland that gave way to the planned city. Its history makes the house part of the visit, not simply a setting for the collection.

The museum opened in 1943 as the History Museum in Belo Horizonte. It was later named for Abílio Barreto, a local journalist and historian who was commissioned in the 1940s to collect and organize the city’s archives. The resulting collection uses objects, paintings, photographs and documents to tell the story of Belo Horizonte.

Three parts of the visit

Start with the historical material displayed in the large room near the entrance. Photographs and other objects introduce the city’s past through its collections. Outside, a separate transport display adds another angle on local history. Finish with the farmhouse itself, whose preserved rooms connect the exhibits to the area’s earlier rural landscape.

The grounds have gardens and a stage where concerts occasionally take place. If live music is part of your plan, check whether an event is scheduled before visiting. The museum is in the Cidade Jardim neighborhood, at Avenida Prudente de Morais, 202.
