Phobjikha Valley

Travelers come to Phobjikha for the black-necked cranes that winter in the valley and for slow walks across open fields below Gangtey Monastery.

Phobjikha Valley is a glacial valley in Wangdue Phodrang District, in central Bhutan, at about 3,000 meters. Open fields and marshy ground sit inside a ring of pine forest. Each winter, black-necked cranes fly in from the Tibetan Plateau to feed and roost here, and the valley is one of their main wintering grounds in Bhutan. Gangtey Monastery sits on a ridge above the fields.

Phobjikha suits a slow trip built around nature and walking, and it fits into a wider Bhutan route. Most visits fall between November and February, when the cranes are in the valley. Plan at least one or two nights to walk the fields and visit the monastery. Walks on the valley floor and the trail up to the monastery are the main activities. The drive in is long and nights are cold, so pack warm layers. Beds are limited, so book your stay early and confirm the dates with your operator.
