Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory in the North Atlantic, known for pink sand beaches and clear blue water. It is an archipelago of 181 islands, but the main islands are joined by bridges and look like one landmass. Most hotels are on the south shore. Hamilton is the capital, and St George's is the old first capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Royal Naval Dockyard is the island's most popular visitor attraction.

The climate is tropical, with warm winters and hot summers, and humid ocean air keeps temperatures fairly mild. The ocean averages about 28.2 °C (82.8 °F) in August, so summer swimming is comfortable. The lowest temperatures usually come in February and March, and rainfall is lowest in April and May. Hurricanes often turn toward Bermuda but usually weaken on approach, so check storm warnings before you travel in the hurricane months. Snorkelers can reach reefs straight from the shore, especially at Church Bay.

Five things to know before Bermuda

Air and private yacht arrivals must complete the Arrival Card before or on arrival. It is free on the official government site; sites that charge a fee are not official. Visas and entry

  2. Plan to get around without a car

Visitors cannot rent standard cars. Use the pink-and-blue public buses, the public ferries, taxis, or rent a small electric car or scooter. Getting around

  3. Pack a layer from December to March

Bermuda is in the Atlantic, not the Caribbean. Winter highs are around 20°C with wind, pleasant for golf and walking but cool for swimming.

  4. Pay in Bermudian or US dollars

The Bermudian dollar is at par with the US dollar and both are accepted. Change often comes back in Bermudian dollars, which you cannot spend at home.

  5. Book around hurricane season

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with most storms from August to October. Bermuda's peak risk is August to October; watch forecasts and hotel storm policies. Travel insurance
