Go for the royal palaces of the Dahomey kingdom, where earthen walls carry bas-reliefs of kings and warriors, in a small town that was once the capital.

Abomey is a town in south-central Benin, about 100 km north of Cotonou, the country's largest city. From the early 17th century until French forces took it in 1894, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Dahomey, and its royal palaces still stand in the town. The palace complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its earthen walls carry bas-reliefs of kings, warriors and scenes from the kingdom's past, and the Historical Museum of Abomey holds royal objects.

Go here for history and living culture rather than beaches or nightlife. A day or two covers the palaces, the museum and the town, and vodun, the traditional religion of Benin, is part of daily life here. The dry season, roughly November to March, is the most comfortable time to visit, since the rainy months make the roads harder to travel.
