Namur is a French-speaking city in Wallonia, Belgium, and the capital of both the region and Namur province. The Sambre and Meuse meet here, and river barges pass through the city. Namur is also a railway junction on the Brussels to Luxembourg and Lille to Liège lines. The Citadel, once a military site, is now open to the public. In the city, see the 18th-century Cathedral of Saint Aubain and the belfry, part of the UNESCO-listed Belfries of Belgium and France. The Musée des Arts Anciens displays Mosan art, including works by Hugo d'Oignies. Other museums cover archaeology and the graphic artist Félicien Rops.
Namur sits at the head of the Ardennes and makes a base for visits to Maredsous Abbey, Floreffe Abbey and Annevoie Castle with its gardens. Jambes, on the south bank of the Meuse, is now effectively a suburb. The Combat de l'Échasse d'Or, a stilt joust dating back to 1411, takes place on the third Sunday in September. The Mélans and Avresses compete in medieval dress, and the event joined UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2021. The city also hosts an annual French-speaking film festival, Nam'in'Jazz and Verdur Rock, as well as a cyclo-cross race on the hills around the citadel.

Is Namur worth visiting?
Yes, for a quiet day with a view. The Citadel park is free, the river setting is pleasant, and the town is easy to reach from Brussels. It is not a headline city, so treat it as a half-day add-on or a base for the Ardennes.
How do you get to the Namur Citadel?
Take the cable car from Place Maurice Servais, the TEC bus line 3 from the train station to Rond Point Thonar, or walk up through the park. The Citadel lists free parking at Terra Nova if you drive.
Is the Namur Citadel free?
The park is: it can be visited at any time of year at no cost within its gate hours. The underground galleries, the Visitor Center and the tourist train charge admission, and the cable car has its own fares.
How long does the train from Brussels to Namur take?
SNCB lists an average of 1h06 on direct trains, with 41 trains a day. Times vary by time of day and by train type, so check the official planner for the connection you want.
Namur or Dinant for a day on the Meuse?
Namur has the larger town, the Citadel park and more rail connections. Dinant is smaller and sits beneath its own citadel with the Sax museum. If you only have one day, pick Namur and treat Dinant as a second stop.
