Innsbruck is the capital of Tyrol and Austria's fifth-largest city, set in the Inn Valley in western Austria. Its name means 'bridge over the Inn', after the medieval river crossing where the settlement began. The city sat on a major medieval route between northern and southern Europe, and Emperor Maximilian I often held court here. His Golden Roof, built around 1497 to 1500, is the best-known landmark in the Old Town.
The mountains sit close on both sides: the Nordkette rises to the north and the Patscherkofel to the south. The Nordkettenbahn cable car climbs toward Hafelekar, where hiking routes begin. Winter suits skiing, with ski areas within reach, and summer suits hiking, though summers can be cool and rainy or reach 34 °C. The foehn wind can gust up to about 120 km/h in the city and can bring sudden thaws, so check the forecast before a high-ridge day. Plan two days for the Old Town and one mountain day, with more time for day trips into Tyrol.

- Get the Innsbruck Card or Welcome CardThe Innsbruck Card gives free entry to museums and sights, free rides on the Nordkette and other cable cars, and public transport, plus discounts. The Welcome Card is free from two overnight stays and includes public transport; from three nights it also covers cable car rides, with fewer lifts in winter.Tours and tickets
- Set up a Nordkette day from the cityThe Nordkettenbahn cable car runs up to Seegrube and Hafelekar, and the Hungerburgbahn funicular links the city with the Hungerburg district. The Hafelekarspitze, at 2,334 m, is about a ten-minute walk from the Hafelekar station.
- Carry a windproof layer for the foehnThe foehn wind can gust up to about 120 km/h in the city and up to 200 km/h on the Patscherkofel, in every season. It is most common in autumn and can bring sudden thaws in winter.
- Ride trams 1, 2, 3 and 5 around townLine 6 runs to Igls, and the STB line goes to Fulpmes in the Stubai Valley. Buses and night buses cover the rest of the city.Getting around
- Visit Bergisel for the ski jump and 1809 battle siteThe Bergisel ski jump, rebuilt in 2001 to a design by Zaha Hadid, is a stop on the Four Hills Tournament. Andreas Hofer's Tyrolean forces beat Bavarian and French troops here in 1809, and Hofer's tomb is in the Franciscan church.
